Space

By Patwant Rhodes

Deep meaningful healing can occur when we create space, external and internal space. If there is too much noise, clutter, activity and we fill our schedules up to the brim, to the last hour and minute of the day without allowing breathing space and time for integration of all the effects of what we have consciously worked with, how can anything truly shift, truly heal, truly transform, actually the opposite happens and we restrict ourselves, trapping ourselves in high alert states with our nervous systems and glands on guard, our bodies and beings in a locked, held state just keeping it together like we`ve always done. You may have experienced getting sick when you finally take leave, as you finally have permission to let go, process, eliminate and deeply rest.

If we push ourselves at the expense of what we actually require we bit by bit day by day year by year drain our vital life force energy, even if we have the best intentions and are eating correctly, exercising, stretching, meditating, breathing correctly and sleeping well.

The rhythms of our bodies change. Our needs change like seasons change, sometimes we are more energetic, other times less so and we need to be flexible and learn to tune in and listen to the subtleties of what our bodies require and adapt our practices and rhythms to honour that with enough breathing spaces to process and integrate all of the myriad of interactions and experiences that we have.

Western culture is addicted to doing, instant results, predictable outcomes and quick fixes. Healing does not happen that way.  Healing takes its own time, is a journey of discovery and recovery and often requires delving deep and unlocking that which we have been holding, it can expose our deepest vulnerabilities, fears and patterns that all require time and space to be digested. When committed to a healing path you will realise healing is a process of peeling away very fine layers. Mind, body and soul are intricately connected and all constantly reflect each other, our bodies are truly our temples. How do we intimately relate to the temple we inhabit? How does this temple speak to you, whisper to you, support you? There is always something more to be revealed, to be released, to be processed, to be healed.  There is always something to learn and unlearn. Learning to be gentle with ourselves is a often challenging, being hard on ourselves is often our default mode. Observe where you can be kinder to yourself, more forgiving.

Healing is a different and unique process for everyone. We are each unique beings physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically and spiritually. There can be no one way for everyone, no one formula that can be imposed.

Our bodies, soul journeys, life journeys and experiences are unique. The lessons we came here to learn are different. What works for one of us does not necessarily work for the other.

May we remember to breathe an expansive state of spaciousness into and between all that we practice and allow our bodies, minds and souls space and time to truly heal thoroughly and deeply. May we listen to the wisdom of our bodies and souls. May we be gentle with ourselves and others as we all navigate our unique journeys. May we create the breathing room we require in order to allow space for ourselves to flourish and grow into our fullest potential.

Initiation Stations Direct

M I S S I O N    2 0 1 9

Initiation Stations Direct

Life masterfully drops us into a witches brew
The eye of yet another storm
I smelt it in the wind
as it whistled and whispered secrets

We know how to tread water
Float
Swim in more than just circles
Untouched
by the contents of
caustic
cauldrons
even as coals were consistently stoked
Violet flames invoked
We dip and dive below the surface
Fly and sing
as we speed through seasons
multiple universes
eclipses
retrogrades
alignments
that birth
galaxies
dying stars
pulsating portals
new moons
and solstices
We traverse and transcend
inner and outer worlds
that unrelentingly refine us
into
a
healing
elixir
an
essence
a
remedy
an
avatar
a
nothing
an
everything
ash
mud
stardust

We are reminded how to move quickly

Foxtrot
Ramba
Green mambas on the move
rattling through cages
We
shed
skins
while
we cook
dress
drive
and
dance

We meet walls
and climb them before breakfast
We cross rivers
Swim seas
Drown in stagnant puddles
and die multiple deaths
in traffic jams
deserts
trenches
shopping malls
mountain tops
museums
and banks

We bake naked in the sun
in
s w o l l e n
s
i
l
e
n
c
e

We learn how to let life breathe us in new ways

In a million aftermaths
In the shade
Under trees
In forests
Under waterfalls
On highways
In high rises

We learn how to let life breathe us in new ways

There is another hill to climb
or is it a mountain?
a plateau?
a black hole?

Something

I smell the wind changing again
I
see
 a
smile
that knows how to laugh
has been humbled
can be silent

Hope   b r e a t h e s   through me

The doors for the keys I am holding
do not not exist. Yet.

Patience learns to become me
I
become
patience.

Water Invocation

I am a water bearer
submerged in my element
Cool oceans cascade and ripple through my veins
and seep out through my pores
saturating
my
parched
cracked
dusty
earth

I am a full blown and alive body of liquid
Swollen
with
rip tides
undercurrents
whirlpools
waterfalls
and
tidal waves

am
moist
 with
the
memory
of
monsoon
downpours
and
misty
mountain
dew

Somewhere
howling
wind
drives
sheets
of
pelting
rain
onto
skin and rooftops

I love the vast sound of your grace

Your tributaries
that
traverse
ancient pathways
split
into
immense
webs
of
pure
life force
that
trickle
gush
ramble
spout
and
plummet
deep into my pools

You
 drench
 me
 in
 the
 sweetest
nectar.

Wake Up!

December 1. Aids Remembrance Day. I remember my daughters father who died of Aids. I remember the journey, the isolation, the fear, the strength, the stretching beyond what I knew possible and the new territory I found myself in on a daily basis. I can never forget the quiet, profound, powerfully indescribable miracles. The immense vulnerability, the unknown, the endless void. The awakening.

This little poem I wrote in 2003. There were horrendous fear based myths being whispered in shadows and dark corners. Little girls were being violated. People were being ostracised, attacked, murdered. Fear was running wild.

I say little poem because it only captures the very tip of a colossal iceberg. It is a performance poem and works better performed and not read. I got to perform it at the opening of woman's parliament in Cape Town with a poetry and performance collective I was part of, I can't remember the year.
Amakwirikwiri is a derogatory term used here that refers to foreigners from our neighbouring African countries.

Wake Up!

This is not
a black
white
gay
amakwirikwiri
lesbian
disease

This is not
an uneducated
misinformed
poor
rural
young prostitute
because you did it on your knees disease

WAKE UP!

There is no cure through violating and raping
the pure
the virgin
the little girl next door
A big man like you
what the hell were you thinking
we'd love to think you feel
and know
more

WAKE UP!

Yes of course you can work with
love
and hug
care for
and help
use the same mug
eat from the same plate
without dooming your fate

WAKE UP!

Stop pretending it's not there
get tested
tell the lovers you've had
whoevers been under
on
in your bed
this is the moment now
to get it in your head

WAKE UP!

What about the infected babies
the children
their silent voices
silent pain
Just because we don't see them
does not mean they do not have a name

WAKE UP!

This is our disease
From Knysna to Nepal
Cape Flats to Cairo
Durban to Dubai

From the boring to the bizaar
it's got us all covered
it affects us all

Look in the mirror
Face the facts
The seeds of change begin with that face staring back

It's urgent
it's dire
It's desperate
Take stock

You are the only one
who can make the choice
to
wake
up.

Oh Woman! R i s e

Oh woman

Call yourself back

From your isolation
from stagnant trenches
arrid deserts
hollow caves
and claustrophobic shadow lands
that
speak
behind
rustling
leaves
and
backs

Sing the soulful sinew back onto your bones

Drum
and
stamp
the
tattered
scattered
pieces of yourself
back together
Those parts
that were politely ripped from your hands
and heart
while you smiled
 and
e n d l e s s l y
poured
out
more
than
you
had
to
give

Start

Even if in silence
rocking alone
in the dark

Start

Even if in whispers
Or crawling

It is time to inhabit
the luminosity of your skin
This vast wise container that is you

They will never know who you are
if you do not stand firmly
in these thighs
breasts
and feet
that speak stirring stories
that rattle
tightly bound
one track
minds
and suffocated hearts

If you do not
they will force feed you with lies
spin
you
in
circles
fill you
with a million stories that are not yours
attempt to shatter your vast spaces
that know not of confinement
and only know
the wisdom every cell in your body speaks
every nuance
pulsation
vibration
ripple
pulse
and twitch

They will tell you you are crazy
That you imagine the mystery of your heart
They will interrogate you
demand answers
why's and how's

as you lie tied to their crosses

You hear yourself echoing
 answers
explanations
apologies
in their dark airless torture chambers
while the landscape of your heart
you have walked
track by track
barefoot
blindfolded
naked
in the dark
over
and
over
again

warns you

not
to
betray
it's
timeless
wisdom
that
surpasses
all words
and
bounds

Oh woman

Divine feminine beauty in all your shapes and forms

It is time to R
                         I
                            S
                                E

You need to call yourself back
into the centre of your skin
You need to inhabit this profound territory
shine through the thick tangible veils
in the absolute
T R U T H
of who you are
and what you know without words.

There will be no further annhilation on these grounds.
No
further.

L o v e Is E v e r y t h i n g

l o v e   i s   e v e r y t h i n g:

Love is everything can be a well intentioned, beautifully, intricately woven, safe, protective cloak. Equalizing, neutralizing, sanitizing everything and everyone in a gentle, kind, pinkish green, tinged in gold, purple haze. Watering down loves most exquisitely pure elixir into a sprinkle, a spray, a breeze.

Wearing this love is everything cloak you circle the sacred fire. You feel the heat of the flames.  You feel the warmth, glow and sparks and spread a logical love with both feet on the ground from a safe, sweet and kind distance, with a twinkle in your eyes, a smile on your lips and the gentle light of love in your heart.

With this love is everything cloak you do not risk stepping into a sacred groundless fire to succumb to the purifying burn of loves purest nectar.  You do not risk standing in the blaze of this scorching volcanic pool.  In this sacred fire you are willingly naked, vulnerable, exposed.  In this fire you cannot avoid seeing yourself in the mirror of the other.  The mirror of your soul.  In this fire you stand in the presence of your wounds, your shadow, your power, your weakness, your demons.

In this fire we pulse, crack, rock, sweat, twist, strip and burn into bliss.  Truly burn into bliss.  We are humbled, kneaded, wholed, transformed.

The heat of this fire is not for everyone.

In these flames we live in complete fullness, complete truth.  Stepping into this fire you risk being fully seen, fully and unimaginably deeply loved, every crevice, canyon and black hole of you.

When and if you are ever ready to leave your cloaks, clothes, skin and swords at the temple door and kneel, only then is love truly and purely everything. It is then that you allow this fire of love to initiate you.

Love is you, you are love.

This intimate, conscious love with another is the eye of a needle that is a doorway into the unseen, unknown realms, a threshold into a pulsating infinite cosmic force.  Yes, then love is everything.

This pure and potent love from the sacred fire pit is what heals.  This love is the love that heals you, your neighbour, your friends, your enemies, strangers, humanity, the world, all the planets and the entire universe and beyond. Once you have stepped into this sacred fire, love is everything becomes a sword of blazing blue truth.  This love burns with a purity from deep within and ignites trillions of fires, one star, one atom, one cell, one universe at a time; to create this one pulse, this one breath, that is your breath, that is mine.

The risk of allowing another to deeply, soulfully and purely matter to us allows us to live and vibrate love is everything in its purest most potent form.  From out of these burnt ashes all and everything is possible, something exquisitely new can emerge.

If you are not ready for these flames do keep your beautifully woven cloak on and continue circling the sacred fire, spreading your version of love with both feet firmly on the ground.

looking up, tuning in, opening

There is a need right now to look up, look out, not in a way that is running from what is, but in a way that allows us to see that there is light, a higher vibration, a higher plan, a shift. There is a lightness out of the heaviness. There is a purpose.  There is a plan. There is an infinite, powerful universe that courses through our veins. Find the light.  Keep finding the light and when you do, consciously breathe it.

When we open to life and what it brings in all its forms, when we open to life and what it brings, free of judgments, when we allow what is as it is, we are free. Divine and deep acceptance is liberation, even if only for a moment. Keep practicing it. Acceptance. When we unlock, shed and open, we allow. Allowing brings flow, magic, spontaneity, gifts.

The true path can only reveal itself as we step forward. One foot at a time.

s i t

This month has been full to the brim with waves of intensity, waves of deep unwavering knowing, waves of complete overwhelm, waves of crystal clear clarity, waves of miracles and definitely waves of a subtle scent of something new on the crescent of the moon. There is a scent of something magical in the air as we continue to forge a new path from right where we are, no matter how challenging it may feel, no matter how slow your progress may feel externally.  There is major work happening deep below the surface, in the murky underworld, where excavation is always necessary.  The effects are not quite visible yet. They will be.  If you sniff the wind in those quiet moments, you will sense the wind changing.

Between these great moments of burning fear and allowing the intense feelings of being completely out of control, there is a great sense of everything being exactly perfect as it is, even if we don't completely understand it right now.

My daily practice is what carries me. My sitting in and surrendering to the burn is what carries me.  Our souls are truly great.  We are simply here to fulfill and honour a purpose, a soul contract.  I continually need to remind myself to get out of the way of myself.  It is all way beautifully bigger than me, than you. Once we start clinging, attaching, resisting, running from what is alive for us in this moment, that is our big sign to sit. Sit. Sit and observe what is there. No matter what. SIT.

This month the kriyas that have arisen to be taught are ones like: "wake up the body to handle stress and strain" "radiant body kriya for courage" "kriya for pleasure and happiness" "sexual energy transformation kriya" "glandular shine" lots of healing ra ma da sa sa say so hung meditation, as well as "removing fear of the future" with the beautiful soothing dhan dhan ram das guru mantra for miracles , healing and blessings. Such beautifully perfect kriyas that leave us feeling recentered. Reset.

We are all in the process of birthing a new age. I love the Rebirithing Kriyas that Yogi Bhajan taught in the 80's. They are so pertinent and perfect for these times. A deep clearing of trauma and subconscious pain occurs with each one.

This months Kriya: ARDH KECHARI KRIYA again, was very powerful. Yogi Bhajan said that Kechari Kriya is one of the most sacred kriyas in yoga.  With this particular kriya he said it would take 7 days to integrate the effects. To assist this process he said 32 oz of any citrus juice should be drunk for 7 days after practicing it.

July also saw the ending of my 3 months practice of another round of Sopurkh.  I have done a few rounds of those over the last couple of years..  This month also marked the beginning of another practice of Bound Lotus and Japji Sahib.  This time working towards it being my 1000 meditation. In three years I will let you know how that went!

On this 31st day of July 2016 I leave you with a poem I wrote today after my meditation.

That's the beginning of every life and the end of every life. There is nobody in the world who can tell you what to do or who has an answer for your problems. Your answer to your problems will come from the very self of your own self" Yogi Bhajan

Dropping Your Personal Pain - Rebirthing Kriya as taught by Yogi Bhajan

DROPPING YOUR PERSONAL PAIN - A REBIRTHING KRIYA as taught by YOGI BHAJAN

There will be two more Rebirthing Kriyas at Phakalane, Hout Bay,this year.
28 November 10am - 12pm
19 December 10am - 12pm

On 28 November we will be working with the: Dropping your Personal Pain Kriya.

A few words from Yogi Bhajan about the essence of the kriya:

"The idea in teaching this course is that a lot of people are in pain.  What we are going to do is address the samskaras, the previous incarnation and the path of this previous incarnation, the karma which you have to pay.  A samskara is a debt which you took on and that samskara is the debt for which you wrote,"I owe you". You can't get out of that. All that recorded karma is called samskaras, which stands on your head. It's a toll you have to pay. The second karma is karma which you don't create, actions and reactions which are beyond you...In English, I can simply say, "so shall you sow, so shall you reap, if you do not sow good, you shall weep." Understand that?  We harvest everyday.  Everyday we wake up and we start sowing;  and every night we harvest it...

I'm going to put you in a self hypnosis and trance.  I'm going to change your capacity....I'm going to cut right through."

The Rebirthing Kriyas are very meditative and deep.

Post Tantric 2015

So this is my summary of this years 3 days of White Tantric Yoga at the European Yoga Festival!!! The poem is still untitled!
I will definitely be back for more....

Waves of subtlety
spirit
and power
mount us on a cross
A back to sweating back
jaw clenching
crucifiction

There is no running
from this mallet to nail
to flesh
to bone
to blood
to wood
breath
wrenching
purification

A path
persistently burns
through
the
precious
pounding
pressure
of my lesson laden karma

I gaze deep into the infinite eye of the universe
she gazes back
a dazzling mirror
every intimate reflection captured
for eyes open to see

I crawl at the feetless feet of god
an immaculate
holy
grueling
crawl

I beg
squirm
drop
look away
sweat
laugh
and burn

I
do
not
move
yet
climb with my breath up my spine
and
infinite
sky
dive

rise

a speck
a cell
a keyhole
a microscopic
sailing
seed

In lightness I lift

god
sips
me
in

Soul fractals form and reform
recapture my essence

Desert sun
swollen tongue
Oasis
thirst
quenched

In a crescendo
In a choir
In a cathedral
In sacred silence
stained floods of glass and colour dance

Stripped bare feet
minds
tender hearts and open souls
part seas
skies
and ways
to
spread

Unloading The Subconscious

I think what stood out for us from the Angelic Ghosting Kriya was this: " To communicate, to create understanding, you need three things: a clear head,a radiant heart, and an honest trust within you.

A potent kriya that guides you into the womb of the mother and way beyond that womb deep into the subconscious, the library of the being reading all of your pain and pleasure. Trusting that what arises arises to be healed.

On the 18 July our Rebirthing Kriya is:
Unloading the Subconscious

" I don't know why you have not been told that it is a mental responsibility for you to see your life through your own clarity - not what other people counsel you, not what other people tell you." Yogi Bhajan

If this resonates. Join us. Come unload your subconscious!

Angelic Ghosting

This months Rebirthing Kriya is: Angelic Ghosting.

"Seeing you, who I love - seeing you small, seeing you suffer, seeing you not use your capacity, your capabilities, seeing you not take care of your life, seeing that you do not have the vastness and the strength to deal with life is more painful than living." Yogi Bhajan

He continues to say..."You are children of the commotional self....Why is making a trauma important to you? Why is creating a drama important to you? Why are yelling and screaming important to you? Why is getting angry important to you? Why is getting depressed important to you? Why are apathy and sympathy important to you?..."

If this resonates, the class starts at 10am-12pm Sat 27th June. Phakalane.

Email me to book your space: suryawellnessprogramme@gmail.com

The Rebirthing  classes are deep, transformative, subtle and meditative. The potent sound current of the gong is part of the process.

5 Reasons To Book a Private Kundalini Yoga Session

"Every tomorrow is today.  Leave a legacy and be one with Infinity and then you will be liberated"  Yogi Bhajan

Embarking on a journey of private one to one Kundalini Yoga sessions will serve you in which ever way you need and receive. Your intention may be to deepen your practice or to familiarize yourself with the many facets that Kundalini Yoga incorporates ( the breathing, the mantras, the poses, the meditations) It will increase stamina and confidence or simply be the committed time that you have made for yourself to journey deeper to allow the space for conscious clearing and release, all in the nurturing comfort of your own space.

Benefits of a one to one Practice:

  1. If you have an injury or illness you are recovering from this is the perfect way to practice specific kriyas ( a series of poses with specific breathing and exercises, including meditation) that will assist in your rehabilitation process. The Kriyas that I choose will be specific to what you are working with.
  2. If you are new to Kundalini Yoga this is a beautiful way to familiarize yourself with the practice and work on something specific at the same time.
  3. If you are going through or have gone through massive trauma, abuse, addiction etc...this is a deep and healing way to consciously work and move through what you are dealing with. There are powerful Kriyas that meet every layer and level of our human experience to allow us to move through and beyond traumatic experience to allow deep and authentic healing, releasing what we need to release from our cells, souls and hearts.
  4. Through a one to one practice we can together create a daily sadhana (daily practice) that supports your process, if that is what resonates with you.
  5. To end our private session I will give you some Reiki.  Reiki is a beautiful, gentle and subtle form of hands on healing.

Since I discovered Kundalini Yoga in 1999 this practice has been my medicine.  This practice without a doubt is ancient, powerful medicine that works on the entire being, mind, body and soul. Personally this is the first medicine I turn to heal, strengthen and release.

Rebirthing and Writing Retreat
 With Jai and Patwant
13-14 June
A deepening into your rebirthing process using writing as a tool to further explore.
Only 3 spaces left if you resonate.
21 June Winter Solstice and International Yoga Day

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer" Albert Camus

Winter Solstice is a deep internal time of reflection. We have the opportunity to acknowledge and face the shadow of ourselves, heal wounds and release old patterns that no longer serve us. We pause. We stop. We listen.

What is your soul whispering?

It is in the dark rich soil that seeds crack open and shoot roots deep into the earth and begin the journey upwards towards the light they do not yet see but sense.

On this shortest day and longest night we celebrate the rebirth of the sun. We call back the light. We call back our light.

Join me to mark this winter solstice by practising Surya Kriya - a very doable, for all ages and stages kriya that awakens the sun enegy within. When we awaken this sun energy we draw in our power, focus, energy, enthusiasm and awaken our glowing, warm, blazing inner light. This year the UN has declared 21 June International Yoga Day. How gloriously brilliant is that! Of course for us yogis everyday is yoga day, but what a beautiful honouring this is from the UN.

Time: 11am-1pm
